About Area

Cagayan de Oro City, the City of Golden Friendship, so-called due to list name and nearby gold mines, serve as the regional capital of Northern Mindanao and the major hub of businesses in this part of Mindanao. It was the miracle child of Mindanao as the once quaint fishing town progressed miraculously in the 50s, thanks in part to heavy industries, agro-industrial zones, and shipping, which attracted migrants from nearby Cebu, Negros, and Panay.

Center of commerce and education
Due to its strategic location and historic stability, Cagayan de Oro hosts one of the three Ateneo-branded Jesuit universities in Mindanao, the Ateneo de Cagayan - Xavier University, notably as it also is the home of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro. Other institutions include Capitol University, Liceo de Cagayan University, and the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, along with notable Chinese and Korean-heritage schools.

These schools produce a quality pool of talents employed in the various heavy industries, agro-industrial processing plants, international shipping and recently, the business process outsourcing sector. Only a decade ago, Cagayan de Oro only hosted recruitment hubs for BPO companies in Bacolod and Cebu, but with the PEZA accreditations of commercial and office spaces, BPO companies are entering the job market, retaining and employing as well talents from nearby Iligan and Ozamiz.

Retail sector growth and businesses
Due to its recent economic rebound, Cagayan de Oro attracted national investors, particularly in the retail sector and real estate. Players such as Ayala Land, SMDC, Filinvest, Robinsons, and Megaworld have invested in the real estate sector with Ayala Land and SM notably opening both mass market and high-end concept malls in the city. However, the city's largest local player, Limketkai, continues to dominate the market and have ventured into real estate at a competitive edge.

Economic corridor and interconnectivity
However, developments are not limited to Cagayan de Oro alone. Iligan City, a nearby highly-urbanized city and a hub of heavy industry, has teamed up with Cagayan de Oro to create an economic corridor to attract investments and developments that would benefit both cities. Testament to this partnership is Laguindingan Airport, which serves both highly-urbanized cities, with links to Clark, Manila, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu, Dumaguete, Tagbilaran, Davao, and Zamboanga.

The Port of Cagayan de Oro serves both international and domestic cargo, with shipping links to Manila, Cebu City, Tagbilaran, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Iloilo, and Bohol. In fact, the shipping links between Cagayan de Oro and Bacolod are historic, which facilitated the exchange of peoples, testified by the election of former Bacolod Mayor Joy Valdez, who hails from Cagayan de Oro, and the preeminence of Negros-based, Vallacar Transit-owned bus companies, Bachelor Express and Rural Transit.
